Why some A' Ibom people don't appreciate development - Rev Fr. Patrick Umoessien

By Osondu Ahirika

A Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Patrick Umoessien, says the reason some people  in Akwa Ibom State don't appreciate the frantic effort of the State government to develop infrastructure across the State is because of their self centeredness.

Fr. Umoessien dropped the hint, when the Works Commissioner, Mr Ephraim Inyangeyen, paid an unscheduled visit with his team to assess the flood prone situation, with a view to determine the intervention measures to be taken to forestall further damage at Community Secondary Commercial School, lkot Ebiere, Onna Local Government Area.

The cleric explained that, the mindset of some people is so limited, such that,  the only time they believe government is working, is when they receive one, two or three thousand naira handouts from government officials or get few cups of rice, wrapper or other gift items for themselves.

Condemning this mindset, Fr. Umoessien argued that, people should rather commend the State government for the execution of massive road and other projects that benefit the masses and serves the collective good, than celebrating things that only satisfy an individual.

He submitted that, once such faulty reasoning is corrected, the generality of the People will appreciate and thank God for the performing Governor the State is blessed with in the person of Mr Udom Emmanuel and his team.

Rev. Fr. Umoessien, who is the Parish Priest in charge of the Catholic Church, Asong, in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, commended Governor Udom Emmanuel for transforming the hitherto, very backward community with development through a network of roads and bridges, which he stressed, have opened up the area to development.

Fr. Umoessien also thanked Commissioner Inyangeyen for his selflessness in committing his personal resources to support governments intervention in the school in his hometown and charged other privileged individuals to emulate the gesture.

Commissioner Inyangeyen was conducted round the school by the Principal, Mr Eno Manger, and pledged to immediately renovate the School's Assembly hall and assist in the perimeter fencing project around the school.

The school Principal, Mr Manager and his staff, as well as some community leaders, welcomed the kind gesture and thanked Commissioner Inyangeyen for his sacrifice.

In a related development, Commissioner Inyangeyen also visited The Etinan Round about, which he disclosed will be expanded  within the week to give it a face lift.

The Commissioner for Works, who inspected the Round about with Engineers from Julius Berger directed that, work on the roundabout should commence immediately.

According to Mr Inyang there is no going back with the pace of development embarked upon by the present Administration, as every part of the state must receive the touch of good governance.

Other places visited were the  Outfall drainage site at Ukana lkot ldeh in Essien Udoima Local Government Area, where Mr lnyang directed CCECC to  do a thorough finishing on the Outfall  drainage site .

The commissioner also made a stop by at the one kilometre Asphalt road  by Federal polytechnic, Ukana.Essien Udim local government area.
