May 29: Umo Eno’s inauguration as Akwa Ibom governor sacrosanct – Udom’s aide

May 29: Umo Eno’s inauguration as Akwa Ibom governor sacrosanct – Udom’s aide

The Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State on Media, Rev Richard Peters has said that the inauguration of the Governor-elect, Pastor Umo Eno by May 29 is non negotiable.

Peters made the assertion in an interview on Saturday following the speculation and reports that Eno would not be sworn in due to alleged “certificate forgery”case instituted by the governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party, Senator. Bassey Akpan.

Akpan has told the tribunal that Eno was not at the time of the election qualified to contest because he presented a forged WAEC June 1981 certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during his nomination by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a case which has been ruled by the Supreme Court in favour of Pastor Eno.

Udom’s aide, describing the narrative as a propaganda, wondered why the YPP candidate could not focus on reclaiming his alleged stolen mandate but to delve into a matter that had since been addressed by the Supreme Court.

According to him, “there are rumours on social media by those who failed the election that Umo Eno will not be sworn in.

“This is just the figment of imagination of these oppositions. Umo Eno won the election convincingly and there is nothing anybody can do about it.

“The Supreme Court has verified him qualified. They want to twist facts and figures by abandoning the document they took to the tribunal and start chasing shadows, trying to exhume dead case, a case that has long been put to death by the Supreme Court.

“Umo Eno is the authentic candidate of the party despite the sponsored litigations: he passed through those hurdles and won so what will make him not to be sworn in?”

AKWA IBOM TEACHERS END STRIKE, COMMEND GOV EMMANUEL FOR FRIENDLY DISPOSITION TO WORKERS’ WELFARE

AKWA IBOM TEACHERS END STRIKE, COMMEND GOV EMMANUEL FOR FRIENDLY DISPOSITION TO WORKERS’ WELFARE

The four days industrial action embarked upon by public primary and secondary school teachers in Akwa Ibom State has been called off.

This is sequel to resolutions reached by State Government with the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, at the end of a closed-door meeting held late Sunday evening and presided over by the state Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel at Government House, Uyo.

Briefing Government House Correspondents after the meeting, Commissioner for Labour and Manpower Development, Mr. Aniefiok Nkom, affirmed that government and the labour leaders have dialogued to a compromise on the issues that gave rise to the industrial action and described the resolution as a win-win outcome.

"It was a very peaceful meeting. The Governor saw what needed to be done and the NLC also saw what was delaying the process. So it was a win-win situation and the matters enumerated by NUT Chairman have been resolved," Nkom said.

On her part, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, expressed gratitude to Governor Emmanuel for taking prompt actions to ensure that schools in the state resume.

This, she added, was indicative of the premium Governor Emmanuel places on education and is workers-friendly disposition.

Confirming the resolution, the State Chairman of NUT, Comrade Edet Emenyi, lauded the Governor's disposition towards the teachers, assuring that teachers would return to classrooms for commencement of academic activities.

Emenyi said, "Issues bothering on teachers welfare and non payment of allowances have been resolved today.

“On that note, the teeming teachers in Akwa Ibom State are ready to call off the strike".

The State Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Sunny James, who was also present at the meeting, expressed the solidarity of Akwa Ibom workers with the teachers, saying that the teachers' demand for unpaid entitlements including leave grant, refund of 7.5% deductions for contributory pension and other issues were extensively deliberated upon and resolved accordingly.

He therefore expressed appreciation to the governor for his prompt response to the teachers’ demands, maintaining that the resolution would pave way for NUT to join other sectors of the state workforce in the celebration of the 2023 Workers Day.

BREAKING: SUPREME COURT CONFIRMS AKAN UDOFIA AS AKWA IBOM APC GUBER CANDIDATE

BREAKING: SUPREME COURT CONFIRMS AKAN UDOFIA AS AKWA IBOM APC GUBER CANDIDATE

The Supreme Court has today in Abuja upheld the nomination of Obong Akan Udofia as the Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State.

In a unanimous judgement delivered by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun in the suit marked SC/CV/158/2023, the Apex Court struck out Senator Ita Enang's Appeal and upheld the January 19th 2023 Judgement of the Court of Appeal which confirmed the nomination of Udofia.

The Supreme court held that Akan Udofia is a member of the APC having duly secured the waiver of the party to contest the May 26th, 2022 Governorship Primaries in Akwa Ibom State. The court further ruled that political Parties have a right to grant waivers to members and the lower court erred in ruling otherwise.

Consequently, the court dismissed Senator Ita Enang's Appeal for lack of merit and described it as a mere academic exercise.

With this judgement, the apex court has laid to rest all controversies surrounding the nomination of Obong Akan Udofia as APC flag bearer in the forthcoming March 11th, 2023 Governorship Elections in Akwa Ibom State.
